Week 14

3 things I found interesting or important

  1. "Observation is a crucial first step for learning how to fully participate in any activity, and digital games are no exception. Caregivers who look closely will see that children who appear to be merely observing a game are also asking questions, strategizing and hypothesizing, or posing “what-ifs.”
  2. "The turmoil is an echo of the infamous Gamergate episode of 2014 that featured an organized online campaign of harassment against female gamers, game developers and gaming journalists. The allegations are also of a piece with a decadeslong history of gender discrimination in the technology field."
  3. "The danger is that younger people are being drawn to gamble on esports. In 2019, 17% of esports gamblers were aged 18-24. In general, more and more UK 16-34-year-olds are gambling, and the average age of gamblers is decreasing. The number of problem gamblers aged 11-16 has also quadrupled to more than 50,000 in just two years. This comes at a time when 93% of UK children play video games, averaging three hours a day and a growing number also follow professional esports teams."
2 ways I can relate
  1. I can relate to the article about what the metaverse is and what is it used for because I learned all about it in a social course that I took and it was really interesting. We also learned about what lawsuits have already come and what inappropriate things have taken place.
  2. I can also relate to the third quote because there are a lot of people that I know in that age range that bet on sports, and I think because it's easier than going to a casino and gambling, and with sports, you can actually guess based on how well you know the players.
I question
How do you feel about sports betting and how popular it has gotten among our peers?
