Week 11

3 things I found interesting or important

  1. In some ways, device ubiquity is great. For students with various disabilities, for instance, certain applications can be liberating. In-class polling has become infinitely easier. Students can photograph complicated diagrams rather than trying lamely to copy them down. And those of us with catastrophically bad handwriting -- not that I know anybody like that -- can attest that the opportunity to take legible notes is a game changer.
  2. We are in the midst of a battle for our attention. Our devices have hijacked our brains and destroyed our collective ability to concentrate – to the extent that we’re even seeing the emergence of a “goldfish generation”. That, at least, is the story that’s increasingly being told. But should we be paying attention to it?
  3. By letting email and other messages guide our workday, Cal says we're weakening our ability to do the most challenging kinds of work—what he calls "deep work." Deep work requires sustained attention, whether the task is writing marketing copy or solving a tricky engineering problem.
2 ways I can relate

Firstly I can relate to using an easier option other than the old-fashioned writing when taking notes in class, depending on if it's a big class or not I will use just use the speak button on my MacBook. Secondly, I can completely relate to our devices hijacking our brains but sometimes I catch myself just on my phone and I'm not even doing anything important.

1 question

How do you guys think our devices will affect our brains as we age?

Comments

  1. Very interesting points and I believe devices are going to be very beneficial as we age since our age groups are a weird mix in between but recent generations where they have known NOTHING but technology I believe it will be harmful for them.

  2. I do think that devices will affect our brains as we get older. I think it will make a significant difference with our attention spans which we did talk about this week. I don't think any one of us will try and stop it, because a lot of people now are always on their phone and it is an instinct for us to pick up our phones and stay on them. So it will be interesting if it makes a bigger affect on our brains.

  3. Great blog post! I am honestly scared to think about how devices will affect our brains as we age. I think that overtime devices will degrade our brain processing and make us less able to solve problems and critically think. I also think they will have diminishing affects on mental health, as they proven to have right now.

  4. I enjoyed reading your post! I also find the second point very interesting. It makes me wonder if technology and digital devices are doing more bad for us than good. I think something needs to be done to disconnect us from technology a bit so that it does not negatively affect our brains as we age because it definitely has the ability to do so.
