Week 13

t 3 things I found interesting or important

  1. "Now obviously that technology exists today, but it’s all each vehicle for itself. Now imagine a world where these vehicles can talk to each other. These cars can talk to infrastructure on the side of the road. They can talk to pedestrians, they can warn a pedestrian that they’re coming up behind them. So it really takes your autonomous driving to a whole new nother realm in terms of both efficiency as well as safety".
  2. "Technology and devices are not always made with everyone in mind. People with disabilities are often overlooked and left out of these designs". I find this interesting because of the fact that I never actually thought about how drastically technology affects people with disabilities.
  3. "In the past, technology experts have worried about a “digital divide” between those who could access computers and the internet and those who could not. Households with less access to digital technologies are at a disadvantage in their ability to earn money and accumulate skills".
2 ways I can relate

  1. I can relate to the article "The new digital divide is between people who opt out of algorithms and people who don’t" I once had a friend in high school who wasn't as fortunate as a lot of are, and her family just simply didn't have the money to afford to add another bill like wifi to what they already had. So she had little access to computers because obviously, you need wifi for that device to be useful.
  2. I also can relate to when the pandemic hit and we had to switch over to remote, the professors that I had during my freshman year were so stressed out because something like this hasn't happened to them before in their lifetime so the schools weren't prepared at all. Using Zoom to still make the class happen was a hassle because it was something unfamiliar and had its own technical issues.
I question
Do you think the change in technology hinders people more than it helps?

Deep Dive
I think that it is sad that in China working in such a low-safety environment for a company that is American-based isn't far, even if the company wasn't American-based. It's sad that these people even have to put their lives and or health at risk just to work and provide for themselves or maybe even family.
